Congressman Knollenberg has just sent a letter to the GOP's 2008 Presidential candidates urging them not to support any increases in Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for automobiles.
Knollenberg said that increases in CAFE "would have devastated tens of thousands of good-paying jobs in electoral vote rich states". He fails to mention the devastation that trade and tax policies, that he has supported, have had on the auto industry.
It would be difficult to find ANY legislation to protect the environment that Knollenberg has or would support.

I think the whole CAFE concept is flawed -- the way they do the averaging lets the autos keep building gas guzzling SUVs as long as they balance them out with fuel-efficient vehicles. It's time to change the system altogether -- they need to set standards to be applied to ALL cars/trucks equally. It's the only way we'll reduce greenhouse gases in any meaningful way. I think the Big Three are starting to realize this -- as can be seen by some of the concept vehicles at the auto show -- even though they should have done it years ago. They know they need to develop more of the new technologies and are finally starting down that path. If Joe was smart (which we know he isn't) he'd be less concerned about CAFE standards and more concerned about helping the Big Three develop new technologies to reduce gas consumption, which will help create jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.
Joe was one of four Republican Congress members not to vote on the mimimum wage increase.
Joe was one of four congress members not to vote on the mimimum wage increase, the first in 10 years. Thanks a lot, Joe.
