Oakland Press Letter Points out Misinformaton

Today's Oakland Press has another letter pointing out the lies that were printed on the Letters to the Editor page about me and about my campaign to unseat Joe Knollenberg. It's nice to read some truth for a change.

Lies are the hallmark of Republican and Joe Knollenberg's campaign, but that's nothing new.

McCain says to treat wives with respect

Now, this is just kind of sad. Apparently John McCain is trying to make a statement about how the press and other media should be respectful of the candidates' wives. This is kind of ironic, especially since it has been reported in Cliff Schecter's book, The Real John McCain an occasion where apparently Cindy, McCain's wife, was tossling his hair and commented that he was getting a little thin and he angrily responded by calling her a c*unt and a trollop. I wonder if he would consider that respectful. This clip is a segment from The Young Turks discussing the incident. CLICK HERE for the rest of the story.

John McCain may regret using a green screen

BREAKING NEWS! Why Bruce Fealk Endorses Joe Knollenberg for Congresss

You know what, I've changed my mind. All those letters in the Oakland Press and the Eccentric newspapers have helped me see the light of day. Oh, and this commercial helped too. Here's all the reasons I'm voting for Joe Knollenberg on Nov. 4th, 2008. (Just kidding)

OP Letter Writer Gets It Right

Finally, some truth about Joe Knollenberg and his stance on health care. Liz Sadowski , a family law attorney in Rochester, writes about the real point of my guest opinion in the Oakland Press recently.

Oakland Press Editorial Focuses on the Trees, misses the Forest

This morning's Oakland Press editorial focuses on my recent guest column in the paper. The piece focuses entirely on the wrong issue. My point of the column was not Joe Knollenberg's urging women to do self exams and to get their mammograms. My point was the hypocrisy of Joe Knollenberg being at a health conference for women, when he has such a terrible voting record on health issues. Joe Knollenberg voted against expanding a successful government program that provides health care coverage for millions of low income children (SCHIP). Even when the majority of his colleagues voted to expand the program, Joe voted against it.

The issue for millions of Americans is that they don't have any health care coverage for themselves and their families. Families across Oakland County and this country are afraid every day that they will have a major health issue that they won't be able to afford to get treated because they have no insurance or worse yet, no job.

Oakland County residents are hurting because of $4 gas, lack of health coverage and an uncertain economy and Joe Knollenberg is talking about being called a name.

  • Maybe Joe Knollenberg should start talking about issues that really matter to Americans, like a health care program that makes it so that a mother earning minimum wage can afford to take care of her children when they get sick and take them to a doctor.
  • Maybe Joe Knollenberg should do something about outrageous profits of America's oil companies that continue to rip Americans off at the pump.
  • Maybe Joe Knollenberg should worry more about our soldiers in Iraq that are committing suicide at an unprecedented rate and others that are coming home and not being able to get the care they need to lead productive lives.
  • Maybe Joe Knollenberg should think about what it does to our soldiers to be sent into a war zone for 3, 4, 5 times and what it does to their families.
  • Maybe Joe Knollenberg should vote for funding to screen and treat our soldiers for post-traumatic stress syndrome when they return from Iraq.
  • Maybe Joe Knollenberg should introduce legislation to address the mental health issues that are causing our returning soldiers to commit suicide at the highest rates in history.
  • Maybe Joe Knollenberg should think of what a war that our President lied us into and our country is borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars from China to support is doing to our nation's economy and the fact that our great, great grandchildren will be working to pay off that debt. Those are some of the real issues.
  • Why isn't Joe Knollenberg talking about those issues, instead of worrying about whether his opponent's campaign literature has a logo on his shirt or not?

Joe Knollenberg has had almost 16 years to make the lives of his constituents better and his most noted legislation is the repealing of a law that required low-flush toilets because they couldn't clear the bowl. I know my life isn't one bit better because Joe Knollenberg has been my Congressman for the last 16 years.

Other people have noticed Joe Knollenberg's voting record too. I repeat these rankings for those that may think that I've veered off course.

Stop your whining, Joe and let's talk about the issues.

2005-2006 Representative Knollenberg supported the interests of the National Breast Cancer Coalition 0 percent in 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.

2007 Alliance for Headache Disorders ranked Knollenberg as a 0

2007 American Academy of Family Physicians gave Knollenberg a 0 rating

2007 Children's Health Fund gave Knollenberg a 0 rating.

2006 American Public Health Association ranked Knollenberg with a 0 rating.

2005-2006 AIDS Action Council rated Knollenberg with a 0 rating.

2005-2006 American Academy of Emergency Mediine ranked Knollenberg - 50 percent.

2005-2006 American Nurses Association ranked Knollenberg with a 0 percent.

2005-2006 National Rural Health Association ranked Knollenberg with a 0 percent.

Knollenberg Campaign off Track

Today's Politically Speaking column in the Detroit Free Press refers to a post made on this blog. Apparently Sandi Knollenberg, wife of Joe Knollenberg has taken a comment here and turned it into a fundraising issue. Glenn Clark, 9th District chair for the Republicans is being so petty as to suggest that a picture on a piece of literature is considered "elitist" because a logo appears in one photo, but not another. It seems the Knollenberg campaign is off into the grass now and is so rattled by the strong anti-Knollenberg campaign, that they are forgetting about the issues facing voters in Oakland County, like health care, the economy and a disastrous war in Iraq. How about we raise the level of discussion, Joe and stop using the Karl Rove play book?

As far as Joe Knollenberg's record on health care issues, look at these rankings from several health advocacy groups.

Congressional contest gets snarky

It was a big week in presidential politics. The presumptive Democratic and Republican nominees started hammering each other on the economy, the war in Iraq and ethics.

But in Oakland County, one congressional campaign was mired in concerns of who said who's a jerk and breast cancer.

Sandie Knollenberg, the wife of U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg, a Bloomfield Township Republican, issued a fund-raising letter blasting Democratic challenger Gary Peters for labeling her husband a "jerk" for supporting breast cancer prevention.

But the "jerk" label came from a blog by Bruce Fealk, a Knollenberg provocateur who is not connected with the Peters campaign. Fealk, using wildly creative interpretation, wrote that a newspaper column by Knollenberg suggested that women are responsible for creating their own cancer.

Republicans took another shot at Peters, a former state lottery commissioner. They noted his campaign brochure shows a stern-looking Peters wearing a blue shirt with a Ralph Lauren Polo label. On the inside photo, the Polo label has vanished.

Republican activist Glenn Clark claimed that Peters airbrushed the Polo label to show he's not elitist, suggesting, of course, that he really is. Peters' campaign pooh-poohed the claim as a nonissue to distract from Knollenberg's record.

Economy and war, anyone?

Veterans Ready to Knock Doors for Peters - Detroit News

Dems battle to woo leery veterans

Party works to shake off lingering anti-war image with more focus on military issues.
Deb Price / The Detroit News
WASHINGTON -- Army veteran Chuck Griffiths grew up in a Democratic household, but feels the party "abandoned" him decades ago and hasn't won back his trust on military issues.

"The anti-war activists were outside the Democratic Party in '68 and running the party by '72," said Griffiths of Westland. "It's anti-military, by and large. If they really want to appeal to people like me, they need to put more guys like (Vietnam War veteran and Virginia Sen.) Jim Webb in leadership positions and not as window dressing."

His view isn't hard to find around VFW halls and other gathering spots of veterans. Pollsters and military analysts say vets tend to be more conservative -- and more Republican -- than other voters. But Democrats, in a national trend demonstrated in Michigan, are increasingly trying to woo the Chuck Griffiths of America.

The party is running challengers with Persian Gulf-era military experience, such as Gary Peters, who is trying to oust eight-term Republican Rep. Joe Knollenberg in Oakland County and has a "Veterans for Gary Peters" group ready to knock on doors for him. CLICK HERE for the rest of the story.

Joe and Many Republicans Vote Against Efficient Schools

I borrowed this post from another blog, but since Joe fell into the category of Congressmen voting against this bill, I thought it was important to include here.

Republicans Vote Against Efficient Schools

Republican politicians are always complaining that public schools are not efficient enough. They use this complaint as an excuse for cutting off the funds that public schools need to give American children an adequate education.

Yesterday, the Democrats in Congress called the Republicans’ bluff. You want efficient public schools? Good. Congressman Ben Chandler, who is very far from liberal, had introduced H.R.3021, the 21st Century Green High-Performing Public School Facilities Act. The proposed law would encourage public schools to run efficiently.

No more money-guzzling out of date school buildings. No more safety hazards for American children. The legislation would provide an investment in energy-efficient, healthy, technologically-updated schools. That way, taxpayers would save huge amounts of money on their property taxes by not having to pay so much on energy costs for schools at a time when the price of energy is shooting through the roof.

Under this law, more money would go toward quality education. Less taxpayer money would go to just keeping children warm in the winter, or to protecting schoolchildren in the South from record-breaking heat. For a small national investment in efficient schools, taxpayers around the country would get huge savings for an entire generation to come.

This legislation does exactly what Republicans say they want to do. It makes public schools more efficient. In fact, the bill makes such plain sense that 27 Republican members of the House of Representatives crossed the aisle yesterday to vote in favor of it. Thanks to them, the bill passed, and will become law if passed by the Senate. One of those Congressmen was our own Joe Knollenberg. Let's hear it for Joe. BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Oakland Press Letters off base

These letters in the Oakland Press missed my point entirely. I'm all for preventive health care for everyone, not just women. That having been said, Joe Knollenberg seems to think that his bill will solve America's health care crisis. He thinks that by doing away with "frivolous" lawsuits we can cut the cost of health care significantly. It's just not true and he knows it or maybe he's cherry picking information the way George W. Bush did lying the United States into war with Iraq. Who knows.

Joe Knollenberg's voting record on health care for all Americans is abysmal. Joe opposes universal health care, even though a majority of Americans say it's time to cover everyone, not just our Congress men and women. Why shouldn't every American have the same health care coverage that Joe Knollenberg has? Joe even voted against expanding health care coverage for children, our most vulnerable citizens saying it was too expensive. Yet he votes time and again to fund the fiasco in Iraq. How does that make any sense?

Something else I found interesting, in 2005-2006, Joe Knollenberg got a 0 rating from the National Breast Cancer Coalition. CLICK HERE to see Joe's ratings on other health care issues.

2005-2006 Representative Knollenberg supported the interests of the National Breast Cancer Coalition 0 percent in 2005-2006.

Oakland Press: Knollenberg Shouldn't Dole Out Blame In Health Issues

See if reading Joe Knollenberg's callous approach to health care doesn't make your blood boil too.

Joe, You Really are a Hypocrite Now It's Personal

Joe, I'm talking directly to you because I know you and/or your staff read this blog.

I read it in the paper this morning, but I couldn't believe my eyes. As I read your guest column in the Oakland Press I got so mad I could barely contain my anger. Is he actually saying what I think he's saying? Is he really, in essence, blaming women who get breast cancer for their disease because they weren't vigilant enough in doing self exams and having mammograms?

Let me tell you something, Joe. My sister, Joyce, died at the age of 41 from breast cancer. She did her self exams. She had her mammograms. And you know what, she got breast cancer and died any way. She had the best care available, but she died any way. So for you to write on the pages of a major Oakland County newspaper that women have to be more vigilant and to use breast cancer as a way to promote your lousy wellness program as a "health care" program is ludicrous. Sometimes people get sick and it's not their fault, Joe. No wellness program in the world could have prevented my sister's illness and you, sir, are a jerk for even suggesting that your wellness program is the answer for what ails America's health care system. Your legislation wouldn't have helped my sister and it won't help the tens of millions of people in this country that are going bankrupt and dying because they have no health care coverage.

Another thing, Joe, trial lawyers are not the cause of the expense of our health care system either. Oh, I know Republicans like to blame big bad trial lawyers, but it's just not true. What you call frivolous law suits only account for about 1% of the cost of our health care system, not too high a price to pay to have the right to get justice if a negligent doctor harms you. I bet you'd sing a different tune if something happened to one of your loved ones. You'd be in a lawyer's office so fast it would make my head spin if it happened to Sandi or Marty or Steve or your grandchildren. That's the problem with most Republicans. They scream about other people suing big companies or doctors and their insurance companies, until they need to use the system to get what small measure of justice financial compensation provides.

What's even worse, you voted against the expansion of the children's health insurance program that would have covered an additional 10 million children, children that get sick and may not be able to go to a doctor for preventative health care because their parents can't afford it. These days, with $4 a gallon gas, real Americans in your district are having to choose between driving to work and taking their child to the doctor. What are you doing about that, Joe?

Name me one American that doesn't deserve the same health care program you have in Congress, Joe. Can you name even one? I didn't think so. No amount of "personal responsibility" would have saved my sister's life. What's even worse, if she hadn't had health care coverage through her employer, she would not have been able to afford the care she got. Thank god she had an employer that cared enough to have excellent coverage for his employees and didn't instead take your approach, perhaps eliminating employee health care in favor of a "wellness program" and a $200 tax credit.

You, sir, do not deserve the high office you have been serving in for the last 15 years.

My sister Joyce

Administering the Bush/McCain Challenge in Rochester at the Heritage Festival

We had a great time talking to people at the Heritage Festival in Rochester. Most people already knew the only difference, McCain is older.

George Bush, John McBush and Joe NOllenberg at the Heritage Festival in Rochester

Here's something I'd never do with the real McCain and Bush. But I think the T-shirt says it all.

Joe NOllenberg made a visit to the Heritage Festival in Rochester on Saturday. I think Joe feels America has had enough of his brand of Republican, as you can see from his t-shirt. Enough of George Bush, John McCain and Joe Knollenberg. Joe is pretty tight with George and John. Joe's voted with George W. Bush 94% of the time and most people couldn't tell the difference between George and John McBush when the took the Bush/McCain Challenge. My favorite question was who finished 894 out a class of 899 in college? Answer: John McCain.

Mike Smith of Clawson joins Joe, John and George for a photo op.

Dave Woodward, Oakland County Democrat Chair, in Spinal Column on the Peters/Knollenberg race

The May 21 edition of the Spinal Column contains a rather lengthy interview with Oakland County Democratic Party chair, Dave Woodward. Woodward had some specific comments about the Peters/Knollenberg race you may find interesting.
SCN: U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg has been targeted by the Democratic Party and is considered to be vulnerable this year, after barely beating his Democratic opponent in 2006. Tell us why you think Gary Peters can be successful in the general election.

Woodward: Gary Peters understands first and foremost what's most important to the voters of Oakland County, and that's leadership that will help create jobs. Gary, in his own rite, has a huge amount of experience in serving his country in the Navy, serving his community while being everything from being a city councilman to being a state senator, completely within the district, to being an administrator when he worked as director of state lottery and generated record revenues for public education. (He has) all those things combined with broad leadership and values in sync with the priorities of this county, and he knows how to run a campaign. But most importantly he knows how to lead with his values and voters in Oakland County want change. They are sick and tired of the same old policies that have gotten our county and our nation in the situation that it is in. Joe Knollenberg has voted with President Bush almost 100 percent of the time and continues to embrace those failed policies. So voters have to ask themselves are they ready for change, are they ready for a new direction, are they ready for someone who's going to fight for job creation and to keep jobs from being outsourced overseas, investment in our young people in terms of early education and higher education, and protecting our environment.

Joe Knollenberg has scored very low in all of those arenas. Voters will have that opportunity. I'm very confident things are going to change.

SCN: We don't nearly as often hear that U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter is as vulnerable as Knollenberg, but his district has traditionally been a swing area. Please explain why you do or don't think the Democratic Party should shift some of its focus away from defeating Knollenberg and devote more toward knocking off McCotter.

Woodward: I think it's a couple things. I think Knollenberg and McCotter are equally vulnerable. There's no question. I think, again, voters in general want a change. I think when you look at Joe Knollenberg's record, he is extremely out of touch, much more entrenched in Washington. Is he easier? I guess I don't know. I do expect significant resources will be spent in the 11th Congressional District, which Congressman McCotter represents. You have to remember this stuff isn't happening in a vacuum, that we're going to have a presidential campaign like Michigan has never seen before. Whomever that nominee is — and very likely, most likely it will be Sen. Barack Obama — you'll see an immense amount of resources spent to make sure we maximize the turnout of every single voter in Michigan, thereby including both congressional districts. I don't believe at some levels there are significant resources that take on incumbents, unfortunately. It's by flawed design that incumbents automatically walk out with huge leads in these kinds of races. You need candidates who can raise money. You have two democratic candidates who really are breaking records across the country in the amount of money they've been able to raise this early in the game. So that's why there's a lot of attention in the Knollenberg (district) but I wouldn't say that we're writing off the other races. I think we are going to have them and can pull off these elections come November. I think there will be a lot of surprises. There will be races that couldn't have of been won, but will be won because voters are frustrated with the direction George Bush has taken this country, and people want change.

Will Joe Knollenberg Call John McBush and Demand McBush Denounce Hagee?

Some more inflammatory audio has turned up. Now Hagee is outright saying that God sent Hitler and that the Holocaust was a good thing because it forced the Jews to move to Israel. Being raised Jewish, I can't even begin to tell you how offensive I find Hagee's comments. These comments by Hagee and McBush's refusal so far to denounce Hagee is a story that the corporate media needs to bring to the fore. Joe Knollenberg has substantial support among the Jewish population in Oakland County. Will his Jewish support dwindle by his being affiliated with John McBush and McBush's refusal to disassociate himself from Hagee?
Here's the audio of Hagee's comments.

John McBush, Joe Knollenberg and the Republicans are the real Elitists

I found this video today and it points out what a crock of hooey it is when John McBush refers to Barack Obama as an elitist. Obama just recently, with proceeds from his book paid off his student loans. On the other hand, John McBush dumped his first wife for a rich heiress and they own 8 homes across the country. Cindy McCain just divested her portfolio of investments in the Sudan. Apparently she thought that they might be a problem in the campaign and she refuses to ever release her tax returns.

Joe Knollenberg is also wealthy from his prior involvement in his insurance business. Maybe that's why he is so opposed to universal, single-payer health care for all Americans.

Joe Knollenberg and John McBush have a credibility problem

This video points out why Joe Knollenberg and John McBush have a real problem with the American people when it comes to telling the truth.

Oakland Democrats and Gary Peters in Birmingham

Oakland County Democrats were out in force on Sunday in Birmingham's 75th Anniversary parade. Democrats Sheila White Smith, candidate for County Clerk, Gary Peters, candidate for the 9th Congressional District and Jane Boudreau, candidate for Oakland County Sheriff joined the troops as we marched through downtown Birmingham.

Joe Knollenberg wasn't quite so popular. We found Joe's thundersticks in the trash outside the Townsend hotel and there were lots more in trash cans all over downtown Birmingham.

I Wonder if Joe Knollenberg's Jewish Supporters Will Tell Joe to Denounce Hagee and McCain After Hearing This

Audio Recording of McCain's Political Endorser John Hagee Preaching Jews Are Cursed and Subhuman
By Bruce Wilson Thu May 15, 2008 at 02:15:20 PM EST printable version print story
Review it on NewsTrust
Yesterday I discovered an astonishing audio recording of a sermon, by controversial McCain endorser Pastor John Hagee, in which Hagee elaborates on his view that Hitler and the Nazis were divine agents sent by God to (with gruesome inefficiency it would seem) chase Europe's Jews towards Palestine. In his 2006 book "Jerusalem Countdown", Hagee proposed that anti-Semitism, and thus the Holocaust, was the fault of Jews themselves - the result of an age old divine curse incurred by the ancient Hebrews through worshiping idols and passed, down the ages, to all Jews now alive. In the sermon Hagee also clarifies a point, on his theological views, that has long concerned me. I might have used any number of titles to describe this sermon by Pastor John Hagee, given in the late 1990's and then mass marketed as part of a book Hagee published in 2001 and republished in 2003, "The Battle For Jerusalem".

How Would You Punish John McBush for Wanting to Talk to Hamas?

Joe Knollenberg gave this interview to Fox News regarding Jimmy Carter's visit to talk with the leaders of Hamas, saying we should never negotiate with terrorists. Two years ago, John McBush said that we should talk to Hamas because they were now the elected government.

Here's John McBush's Interview from two years ago on talking to Hamas

Joe, Come Take the Bush/McCain Challenge May 24 in Downtown Rochester

This is a challenge to all Joe Knollenberg supporters and to you too, Joe. Come to the Farmer's Market in downtown Rochester next Saturday, May 24 and see if you can tell the difference between John McCain and George Bush. You may be surprised at the results. We'll be set up just outside the entrance.

John McCain's Budget May Cause Knollenberg and Republicans to choke on deficits

Is this the kind of "fiscal responsibility" Republicans and Joe Knollenberg want to associate themselves with? Republicans talk about cutting taxes from now until kingdom come, but they fail to reflect on what those tax cuts mean to the American landscape. I guess they just want to keep borrowing money from the Chinese to pay for the massive deficits spending. More tax and borrow from Republican, John McBush.

McCain’s Budget Would Create Largest Deficit In 25 Years, Largest Debt Since WWII

Sen. John McCain promises that, as president, he would “cut taxes and balance the budget.” But his current economic plan would create deficits as deep as 5.7% of GDP by the end of a two term presidency — the highest federal budget deficit in 25 years — and would accumulate the biggest debt since the second World War, according to a new analysis by the Center for American Progress Action Fund. McCain’s current fiscal plan would recklessly exacerbate the fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush Administration further by gutting revenues far below the average level of the past 25 years.

For the past 25 years, deficits have never been more severe than 5% of GDP, with surpluses as high as 2.4% of GDP in the year 2000. Under McCain, yearly deficits would increase sharply, beginning with $505 billion in FY2009 (3.4% of GDP) and skyrocket to $1.2 trillion (5.7% of GDP) by FY2017. In 2018 these deficits would reach 6% of GDP, tied with the largest deficits since WW2 in 1983. Current Bush policies would keep the deficit in 2017 to $660 billion (3.1% of GDP).

According to the study, McCain’s economic plan, (which includes a corporate tax cut, a full repeal of the AMT, and an extension of the Bush tax cuts) would leave a debt of $12.7 trillion (the highest since 1951 when America was still holding debt from WW2) by the last budget of a two term presidency starting in 2009 (FY2017). This debt is $3.5 trillion more severe than the one resulting from an extension of current Bush policy, which would leave a debt of $9.2 trillion (43% of projected GDP).

McCain would slash government revenues, which have averaged 18.3% of GDP for the past 25 years, to their lowest levels since before 1962. Revenues would average only 16.3 percent of GDP for the duration of his two terms. Under current Bush policy, revenues would remain above 18 percent of GDP.
This analysis currently incorporates the most generous possible savings McCain has offered thus far: an $18 billion cut of wasteful earmarks and a $15 billion “freeze” in wasteful spending, with the savings grown at the rate of GDP growth over his presidency. These “savings,” which come no where near paying for his reckless tax cuts, already include “heavy cuts in after-school programs, student aid, public broadcasting, and job training.” To fill the gaping remaining hole, McCain supporters have suggested policies that would lead to “massive cuts” in Social Security.

Will Joe Knollenberg call for cutting off public funds to McCain's campaign?

Our good friend John McCain has done another flip-flop on the American public. Two years ago, in an interview he called for negotiating with Hamas. Joe Knollenberg has called for cutting off funding for The Carter Center recently because of Carter's visit to the Middle East and talking to Hamas. So, it seems to me, Knollenberg, with the revealing of this interview, should call for the cutoff of all public funding for John McCain's campaign, and since McCain has violated his own campaign finance law, by using his public funding as collateral for a loan, urge the bank where the loan was obtained to call in the loan of $4 million.

Two years ago, in an interview with James Rubin for Sky News, Sen. John McCain expressed a willingness to negotiate with the terrorist group Hamas -- the very group that McCain has been relentlessly using to smear Sen. Barack Obama over the last several weeks.

Rubin has written an op-ed in Friday's Washington Post about his exchange with McCain, and The Huffington Post has obtained exclusive video. Here's the key excerpt:

RUBIN: "Do you think that American diplomats should be operating the way they have in the past, working with the Palestinian government if Hamas is now in charge?"

McCAIN: "They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another, and I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy towards Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice, so . . . but it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that."

As Rubin adds:

Given that exchange, the new John McCain might say that Hamas should be rooting for the old John McCain to win the presidential election. The old John McCain, it appears, was ready to do business with a Hamas-led government, while both Clinton and Obama have said that Hamas must change its policies toward Israel and terrorism before it can have diplomatic relations with the United States.

Even if McCain had not favored doing business with Hamas two years ago, he had no business smearing Barack Obama. But given his stated position then, it is either the height of hypocrisy or a case of political amnesia for McCain to inject Hamas into the American election.

Lansing State Journal Rates Peters/Knollenberg Race Tossup from Lean Incumbent

This is the first time that the Peters/Knollenberg race has been rated a tossup, a change from leaning incumbent. Go Gary! CLICK HERE for the rest of the story.

Toss-up

  • Joe Knollenberg (R), 9th District. Former State Sen. Gary Peters is a viable candidate and all the momentum is against the GOP. While few seem to be enthusiastic Peters fanatics, he's been powerful enough to clear what was to be a competitive primary field. In another year, Knollenberg might be safe, but national trends are against him. (Formerly Lean Incumbent)

How Will Joe Knollenberg Defend John McBush on this one?

Wow, the Michigan Republican Party and Joe Knollenberg really screwed up this time. Guess who dead set against the Boeing tanker? You guessed it. John McBush. And there's video. These were good paying, union jobs and John McBush and by extension, Joe Knollenberg, wanted the $40 Billion contract go to European manufacturer, Airbus. Now if this isn't a national security and economic issue for the American people, I don't know what is. Joe Knollenberg is alway saying how he wants to help American manufacturing companies, namely the American auto manufacturers. This decision by John McBush flies in the face of Joe Knollenberg's presumed allegiance to American manufacturers. CLICK HERE to read about how John McBush screwed American workers.

Now will Joe Knollenberg denounce and separate himself from John McBush? Let's see..

The quote below is from the Michigan Republican Party's daily newsletter from Saul Anuzis, the May 14 edition.
BOEING…THE TANKER DECISION…MAKE IT AMERICAN MADE…America’s military deserves the best tanker for the mission and America’s taxpayers deserve the most value for their money. It’s crazy for us to give this contract to the Europeans, when America needs the jobs and America needs to defend itself.

Here's the video of John McBush saying how he saved the taxpayers $2 billion by nixing the deal going to Boeing. He also nixed 40,000 good paying American jobs.

This video is Lou Dobbs expressing his outrage that the deal went to Airbus.

Another Reason for Joe Knollenberg to Repudiate John McCain

It's not widely known, but Joe Knollenberg has a gay son, Stephen. He has a successful interior design company. Joe actually voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment. but you'd think that Joe would have a problem with the presidential candidate he's endorsed, John McCain for his opposition to gay marriage.

This video shows John McCain appearing in a commercial in support of Arizona's ban on gay marriage.

No Republican is safe. Democrats go 3-3 in Special Elections

In the biggest Democratic pickup so far, Democrats prove that no Republican, even 8-term incumbents like Joe Knollenberg are safe. The country is demanding change and Gary Peters will be part of the Democratic wave that is sweeping over America.
Childers victory gives Dems a third straight takeover
Childers, who beat Davis 49-46 three weeks ago but came up just shy of a race-ending majority, joins new Democratic Reps. Bill Foster (Ill.) and Don Cazayoux (La.) to give Democrats a trifecta of upsets in conservative House districts over the last two months.

The loss could send shockwaves through the Republican Party, where murmurs about a leadership shakeup have become more and more audible.

Democrats are backing up the assertion that they remain on the offensive in the cycle following a 30-seat gain, which has historically not been the case after a “wave” election.

McCain Endorser, Hagee, Apologizes. McCain Accepts Apology

This story appeared in the Oakland Press on page A-11. No front page for John McCain's endorser and crazy Reverend. The corporate media continues to give McCain a pass. And not one word from Joe Knollenberg.

And that's that? After all the grief Reverend Wright's comments gave Barack Obama the corporate media is, for the most part, giving Teflon John McCain a pass on John Hagee and Rod Parsley.

Since Joe is a good Catholic boy, you'd think he'd more outraged about McCain accepting Hagee's endorsement. I guess saying things about his religion only matter if they come from a liberal activist. That's what I thought.

As a Catholic, you would think that Joe Knollenberg would be at least as incensed with John McCain over accepting the endorsement of John Hagee as he is with Jimmy Carter for meeting with Hamas. But we haven't heard a word from Knollenberg over McCain's relationship with Reverend John Hagee. With all the attention being given to Reverend Wright, you would think the media and Joe Knollenberg would pay the same amount of attention to John Hagee and Rod Parsley another television preacher with radical views. Eccentric Letter from Republican Gets It Wrong

This letter from a Republican tries again to tie me to MoveOn.org and even tries to trot out the idea that my activities are "well-funded" by MoveOn. So, just to set the record straight, I am a member of MoveOn. However they have not given me one penny. I have no connection to MoveOn other than being on their mailing list and I have hosted several of their events at my home and at Joe Knollenberg's office.

These Republican attacks are so ridiculous they border on the insane. But what is one to expect from the party of George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, John McCain and Karl Rove? Dirty tricks, unfounded attacks, torture, warrantless wiretapping, endless war in Iraq. If you aren't outraged, then you aren't paying attention.

A bumpy ride

Your opinion page of April 17 has another letter from Bruce Fealk bad-mouthing Rep. Knollenberg. It is reported that he is well-funded by MoveOn.org, which is backed by George Soros, not exactly friendly to America.

Its goal is to target Knollenberg and others who don't agree with its ultra-liberal biased agenda. So we know what to expect from here to election and as expressed by Bette Davis in one of her movies: "Button your seat belt. We're in for a bumpy ride."

Joe flip-flops on Mother's Day

Today there was a vote on a resolution recognizing Mother's Day. The first vote was 412-0. Then the story gets interesting. Unbelievably, Joe Knollenberg actually then voted against Mother's Day when a vote to reconsider the resolution was called. Joe and 177 other Republicans actually flip-flopped on a vote recognizing Mother's Day.
Republicans Vote Against Moms; No Word Yet on Puppies, Kittens

By Dana Milbank
Friday, May 9, 2008; A03

It was already shaping up to be a difficult year for congressional Republicans. Now, on the cusp of Mother's Day, comes this: A majority of the House GOP has voted against motherhood.

On Wednesday afternoon, the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H. Res. 1113, "Celebrating the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals of Mother's Day," when Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), rose in protest.

"Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the vote," he announced.

Rep. Kathy Castor (D-Fla.), who has two young daughters, moved to table Tiahrt's request, setting up a revote. This time, 178 Republicans cast their votes against mothers.

It has long been the custom to compare a popular piece of legislation to motherhood and apple pie. Evidently, that is no longer the standard. Worse, Republicans are now confronted with a John Kerry-esque predicament: They actually voted for motherhood before they voted against it.

Republicans, unhappy with the Democratic majority, have been using such procedural tactics as this all week to bring the House to a standstill, but the assault on mothers may have gone too far. House Minority Leader John Boehner, asked yesterday to explain why he and 177 of his colleagues switched their votes, answered: "Oh, we just wanted to make sure that everyone was on record in support of Mother's Day."

By voting against it

Eric B at MichLib reports Cook Report moves MI-09 from Likely Republican to Leaning Republican

This report in from Eric B. at Michigan Liberal.

The Cook Political Report moves Michigan's two biggest races in favor of the two Democrats. The 7th District goes from "Lean Republican" to "Toss up," and the 9th goes from "Likely Republican" to "Lean Republican."

For Mark Schauer, this means the second bit of ratification in the last couple of days. It was Roll Call who most lately called the race a toss up. Without mentioning anything, this really represents a Schauer advantage, since it means moving things in his direction.

As such could be said for Gary Peters, challenging Joe Knollenberg in the 9th. The remarkable thing in the 9th is that Knollenberg enjoys a fund raising advantage over his opponent.

You can show Peters a little extra love tomorrow by showing up between noon and 1:30 p.m. to meet Peters in a live chat with MichLib's readers.

Knollenberg Touts Personal Responsibility But Not Corporate Responsibility

An article in today's Eccentric is about how Joe Knollenberg wants to help the American auto manufacturers. It's interesting, at the legislative update meeting in Rochester a few weeks ago, when talking about health care, Knollenberg talked a lot about personal responsibility in regard to taking care of one's own health. But when it comes to the auto companies taking responsibility for their corporate health, Knollenberg takes a position 180 degrees from his theme of personal responsibility. The auto companies, even though the oil crisis could be seen a hundred miles down the road, continued to build low mileage SUV's and trucks. Why? One word, GREED. They make higher profits off SUV's and trucks than they do smaller, fuel efficient vehicles.

But does Joe Knollenberg ask for corporate responsibility for the troubles of the auto industry and tell the auto manufacturers, let them eat cake? No. Does he want to hold the auto industry responsible for increasing fuel economy? No.

Apparently Knollenberg is at odds with John McCain on this issue also. McCain does want to raise CAFE standards, as he told the Eccentric.

Knollenbeg can't have it both ways, by being in favor of free trade that ships good paying American jobs overseas and then turning around and saying we have to help the auto industry by offering them money to save American jobs. That's not leadership. That's pandering to Joe's auto industry campaign contributors.

"He said he believes in free trade and making the auto industry raise fuel-economy standards. He said the state's auto industry "is not finished."

"Of course the old kind of doing business is not coming back. ... We've got to retrain and educate workers" to take advantage of the new economy, he said. He believes the Big 3 have leveled the playing field through recent contract negotiations."

Knollenberg aims to aid auto industry

by Greg Kowalski

ECCENTRIC STAFF WRITER

The embattled auto industry would get a helping hand with new legislation being proposed by Congressman Joe Knollenberg.

Speaking at the Automation Alley offices Tuesday in Troy, the Bloomfield Township Republican - who is embroiled in a hotly contested re-election bid against Democrat Gary Peters - unveiled a plan to stimulate the economy and "help the Big Three compete."

"This will be a huge shot in the arm to grow our Michigan economy," Knollenberg said.

The proposed legislation would broaden the availability of research and development tax credits for companies; provide support for research in advanced batteries; create two hydrogen fuel pilot programs; require the EPA to streamline protocols and regulations on biodiesel fuel; and establish an inter-agency federal task force on CAFE standards.

CAFE - the Corporate Average Fuel Economy - standard sets how many miles per gallon a vehicle gets. The standards, 35 miles per gallon by 2020, could cost the automakers $85 billion to achieve and add thousands of dollars to the price of a car, Knollenberg said.

"The entire auto industry will make tremendous investments in technology (with the proposed legislation)," said Robert Babik, director of Emissions, Environment and Energy for General Motors.

He spoke in favor of the legislation, as did Fred Hoffman, director of Government Relations for Chrysler, and Charlie Pryde, director of Government Relations for Ford.

Although the Big Three are competitors, "I don't think there is an inch of space between us in support of the legislations," Hoffman said.

The legislation "will provide critical help to the auto industry," Pryde said.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said the legislation was a perfect match for the focus of Automation Alley, which is a hub of industry research and development.

"It's good for Michigan and good for the global economy," Patterson said.

Whether it, or at least parts of it, is enacted into law remains to be seen.

On the heels of the announcement, Peters issued a statement blasting Knollenberg.

"Real leadership means not waiting for a crisis to take action," said Peters. "I'm going to go to Washington and I'm going to start fighting for Michigan families and Michigan jobs on day one. I'm going to stop giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas and stop giving billions in subsidies to big oil companies who are raking in record profits."

Democrat Takes Seat from 20-year Incumbent in Louisiana. Look Out Joe

Boy, is Joe Knollenberg in trouble. Last night it was reported that the Democrats took back a seat in Louisiana that has been Republican since 1974. Joe only won by about 5% in 2006. Change is in the air Joe, and Democrats are taking back the 9th Congressional District of Michigan.
Dems add to majority with Cazayoux win in La.
Posted: 05/03/08 11:17 PM [ET]
House Democrats continued to expand their majority Saturday night after Louisiana state Rep. Don Cazayoux emerged victorious in a special election for retired Rep. Richard Baker’s (R) district.

The win comes two months after Democrats picked up their first seat of the year. In March, Democrat Bill Foster won the Illinois seat of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R). That seat, like the Louisiana contest, was in solidly Republican areas. President Bush carried the Illinois district with 55 percent and the Louisiana district with 59 percent in 2004.

Cazayoux benefited from a strong fundraising advantage over Woody Jenkins — $810,000 to $490,000 — with much of the help coming from national Democrats. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) spent $920,000 on the contest.

The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) only spent $440,000 on the race and Jenkins received less than $40,000 from GOP members.

Guess What, Joe? You and George W. Bush are Terrorists

This is a brilliantly simple video. This guy lays it on the line and give what I believe to be the real definition of terrorists and it's not the people that flew planes into the World Trade Towers on 9/11. No, it's the people in the White House and the Joe Knollenbergs and the other Republicons in Congress that have really done this country in.

Joe's Ban on Funds for Carter Center Opposed

Funds ban for Carter Center is opposed

Gregg Krupa / The Detroit News

Some Arab-American and Muslim leaders objected Friday to the proposal by U.S. Representative Joe Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Hills, to deny federal funds to the Carter Center in the wake of former President Jimmy Carter's meeting with a ranking member of Hamas.

Amid concerns by the Bush Administration, Carter met in Syria with Khaled Meshal, the chief strategist for Hamas, which the United States identifies as a terrorist organization. Hamas officials also are the elected leaders of the Palestinian Authority.

"As a former president of the United States, you undoubtedly understand that the United States must speak with one voice to our enemies," Knollenberg said in a April 9 letter to Carter. Knollenberg then offered a bill, the Coordinated American Response to Extreme Radicals (CARTER) Act that would ban federal financing of the center Carter established to further human rights.

"Knollenberg's legislation seeks to hamper the efforts of a center that promotes free elections, which the Bush Administration has said is the key to democracy and cultivating progress in the Middle East," said the Council of American Islamic Relations, in a statement.

While the legislation is given little chance of approval in Congress, Arab-American leaders said it was particularly disappointing given Knollenberg's recent efforts to improve relations in the Middle East by forming a bipartisan Jordan Caucus and encouraging relief for the Iraqi refugees.

"There is absolutely nothing constructive about this initiative that supports the Bush Administration's progress towards peace," said Leigh O'Neill of the Arab American Institute.

"I think we are living our last days of the American political era when even a former president can be sanctioned for his political views," said Imad Hamad, regional director of the American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

A group of 50 Republican and Democratic members of Congress recently signed a letter to Carter expressing objections similar to Knollenberg's.

"President Carter or any former president carries with him a weight that other citizens do not," said Nate Bailey, a spokesman for Knollenberg. "And in this particular instance, the action he took was in direct contrast to the stated policy of the United States for more than 20 years."

Thanks, Dr. Death: Suicide Doctor's Nader-esque Congressional Race Will Help Hezbollah's Republican Get Re-Elected; SCHLUSSEL Endorses Dems Running Against Hezbo Republicans

By Debbie Schlussel

A number of readers have asked me what I think of the just-announced Congressional candidacy of Dr. Jack Kevorkian a/k/a Dr. Death. Well, I'm bummed about it, and not for the reasons you might think.

It's rare that I endorse liberal Democrats. But when the liberal Democrat is running against a phony conservative Republican who is one of Hezbollah's two best friends in Congress, I'll take the lib any day. I'd much rather have a sincere liberal than a phony American.

That's the case with Congressman Joe Knollenberg, the man Kevorkian is running against and against whom the liberal Democrat (not Kevorkian) has a chance of beating. I've known Mr. Knollenberg for many years, and he's been my Congressman for several of them. Unfortunately, Knollenberg--along with another Republican, Congressman Darrell Issa--is Hezbollah's go to guy in the U.S. Congress.

GOP Congressmen Darrell Issa & Joe Knollenberg:
Hezbollah's Hookers in Congress;
Schlussel Endorses Their Opponents Peters, Hamilton

As I've detailed on this site, Knollenberg has taken thousands in campaign contributions from Hezbollah's officially-designated American agent Nijad Fares and his Hezbollah front-group PAC, American Task Force for Lebanon Policy. And in return, Knollenberg sought $268 million--and got over $86 million--of your tax money for Hezbollah. The money--purportedly to rebuild hospitals and orphanages "destroyed" by Israel--actually went straight into the coffers of Hezbollah for the purposes of sending more Isrealis and American soldiers fighting in Iraq to hospitals and their kids to orphanages. Knollenberg and his then-Chief of Staff Paul Welday sought this money at the request of Fares--whose father Issam Fares was formerly the Hezbollah-installed Prime Minister of Lebanon--and pro-HAMAS/pro-Hezbollah James Zogby, head of the deceptively-named Arab American Institute (very little American about it, but for an office address).

Fares, it should be noted, also donated to Muslim Democrat Congressman Keith Ellison and the Presidential Campaign of Jihad Fred Thompson, which was shabbily run by Fares' other pan-Hezbo friend, Spencer Abraham. The is the company which Joe Knollenberg keeps. Check out all of Nijad Fares' campaign contributions (he's a close friend of the Bush family, FYI).

One other thing about Jihad Joe Knollenberg: He also made earmarks of millions in your tax money, sending it to 1) the anti-Israel/pan-jihadist Arab American National Museum, and 2) the deceptively-named "Seeds of Peace" summer camp, in which victims of terror and kids of Muslim terrorists are told they are equal and that Holocaust-denial is a valid position; the camp was founded by Yasser Arafat's favorite biographer.

So, how does this relate to Congressional Candidate Dr. Death? Well, Kevorkian is properly reviled by most conservative and Republican voters. He will only take votes away from Joe Knollenberg's very viable Democrat opponent, Gary Peters. The election will be very close. In 2006, Nancy Skinner--who barely put up a fight and raised little money--nearly beat Knollenberg. And the time is now to do it.

Moreover, if he wins, it's believed that Joe Knollenberg will thereafter retire and somehow get his son, Michigan State Rep. Marty Knollenberg, into the seat. Besides supporting gay marriage and other gay issues, Marty Knollenberg--as I've repeatedly noted--also took oodles of money from Hezbollah's Nijad Fares.

Why would a Texas agent of Hezbollah donate money to a State Representative in Michigan? Answers: 1) To reward his daddy for sending millions of your tax money to Hezbollah; 2) to reflect pan-Hezbollah policy in the Michigan legislature; and 3) to get Knollenberg to "see things the Hezbollah way" should he get to Congress.

Michigan's Hezbollah-Knollenberg dynasty must be put out to pasture. And that's why I'm supporting liberal Democrat Gary Peters for this seat. Dr. Jack Kevorkian's candidacy will put my efforts at Knollenberg Family Retirement '08 in jeopardy. And I'm not happy about it. He's the Ralph Nader in this race between Hezbollah vs. America.

The McCain/Knollenberg Hezbollah "Connection

The same Ali Jawad that John McCain just removed from his finance committe has also contributed to Joe Knollenberg's campaign and given Joe $2,250 since the year 2000. Click here for the FEC report showing the contributions. Given Joe Knollenberg's recent tirade against Jimmy Carter for talking to Hezbollah, it seems like Joe's got some splaining to do.
The McCain Hezbollah "Connection" *

April 30, 2008 8:37 PM

The campaign of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., removed a man from his Michigan Finance Committee today.

It started after conservative writer Debbie Schlussel called Michigan businessman Ali Jawad not only a supporter of Hezbollah -- a group the US State Department labels a "terrorist organization" -- but also claimed he was a "key agent of the terrorist group in the Detroit area."

After Schlussel started asking questions the McCain campaign removed him from the finance committee for a May fundraiser.

"Apparently he is a well known member of the Arab-American community in Dearborn," a McCain staffer tells ABC News. "He is also a known Republican donor and former Bush finance committee member. When these rumors surfaced he notified the campaign and we removed him from the finance committee. The guy never raised a dime for us and he isn’t even a contributor."

Yes, that's right, the McCain campaign said they removed him because of "rumors."

Jawad is president of Armada Oil & Gas Company and founder of the Lebanese American Heritage Club.

In 1997 he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor insurance fraud. Prosecutors accused him of submitting names of non-employees to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to receive health insurance benefits and claims. He received two years of probation and he paid approximately $6,000 in fines and restitution.

In this 2002 story, Jawad is quoted saying he "rejects talk that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization that should be shunned by the United States and other governments. 'Killing innocent people -- we reject that,' he said. 'Hezbollah does not fit this category. It has protected its people.'"

Read Schlussel's story -- she lays out many charges against him.

You will note in one photograph in Schussel's story, Jawad is sitting at a table with Michael Rosen, a lawyer and policy advisor with the U.S. Office of Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes of the U.S. Treasury Department, and Andrew Arena, Michigan FBI Special Agent in Charge, and formerly in charge of Counterterrorism for the New York FBI.

This all seems a little odd to me.

Is there anyone out there who thinks McCain supports Hezbollah? Was McCain truly offended by the notion that an Arab-American businessman with sympathy for Hezbollah supports him? Or was today's move just to deprive Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, of some future rebuttal?

* I don't mean "Connection" literally.

UPDATE: I spelled Schlussel's name incorrectly in this original post. Apologies to her; it has been corrected. Moreover, Schlussel says that there was more to the conclusion of USA v. Makki et al, than the small fine I reported. More than $252,000 was ordered to be repaid, most of which came from or Armada Oil, and one associate was sentenced to 8 months in prison and about $75,000 in fines and restitution.

John McCain/Joe Knollenberg Nonsense on Health Care

I found this video today of John McCain addressing the issue of health care, the brilliant thing about it is the pop-ups that tell the truth about McCain/Knollenberg's nonsense on personal responsibility and wellness programs. You could put Joe Knollenberg at the podium and the same words would come out of his mouth. The Republican position on health care is complete and utter nonsense if you really care about the well being of the American public.

Joe Knollenberg asked for patience in Iraq, but really, 100 years?

This is a new ad being run by MoveOn.org. Joe, are you OK with 100 or 1,000 or 10,000 more years in Iraq?
