Now this is funny. Mike Brownfield (Joe's campaign manager)now playing at the Comedy Castle.

Mike Brownfield ought to try out at the comedy club. Joe Knollenberg standing up for American workers. Joe Knollenberg stands up for the CEO's, not the American workers. Did you know GM held a fundraiser for Joe Knollenberg? Joe raised over $50,000 from the high level executives while executives at Delphi, a GM subsidiary, cut the salary of workers in half for new hires at Delphi. Is that standing up for American workers? Joe Knollenberg's policies are ass backwards for the American worker. Did Joe Knollenberg lift one finger to protect the salaries of the workers at Delphi? Joe Knollenberg may protect the salaries of high level executives, but he doesn't give a damn about the salaries of the men and women that work hard every day at factories around Oakland county.

Mike, you might want to send the audition video into Last Comic Standing. I couldn't stop laughing.

Joe's Hormones must be getting to him

Joe might actually be listening to all the anti-war rhetoric lately. I guess he is now advocating peace in Iraq. Joe's new slogan, "Strength Through Peace." Wait. I think that one is taken.

Is Joe Confused About His Sexual Orientation?

With all the Republicans being outed lately, including a Federal prosecutor from Florida that flew to Michigan to have sex with a 5-year-old girl, it looks like Joe might be confused about his sexual orientation.

Joe bloviates on fuel economy standards

I did a little research of my own and again find Joe to be long on slogans and short on facts. In an article in the Eccentric Joe again makes the case that higher fuel economy standards are too costly. Guess what, Joe? You're wrong again.

This picture kind of says it all, Joe's ideas are ass backwards.

I found this little Q and A at http://www.cleanmyride.org/faq.php

Q: Can't people who want fuel efficient cars buy them? Why do we need a law?
The number of fuel efficient models is currently limited. Most automakers only offer no-frills small cars to drivers who want fuel-efficient vehicles, while pouring their advertising money into the bigger cars that make them more money. Yet fuel efficient technologies can work for all types of vehicles, from sub-compacts to SUVs. Saving fuel does not mean sacrificing performance.

Some automakers promised to manufacture more efficient vehicles across the board, but those commitments yielded only about a 5 percent increase in the fuel economy of each company's fleet by 2005. This paltry improvement barely keeps up with the growth in gasoline use, consumer costs, and environmental pollution. Only through federal fuel economy standards can we lock in fuel economy gains throughout the automotive industry.

We need more energy efficient fuel economy standards because car companies do not voluntarily employ cost effective technologies that add safety and protect the environment until they are forced to do so. The government had to step in to safeguard drivers by establishing safety, fuel economy, and emissions standards--requiring air bags in all new cars, for instance, because automakers resisted adding them even though they saved lives. And the government should step up again and set fuel economy standards.

Q: Won't new CAFE standards raise car prices and cost jobs?
An increase in fuel economy standards would raise the cost of a new car by $1,000-$2,000, but will save consumers $2,500-$5,000 in lower gasoline bills. The Senate bill alone would save consumers $25 billion in 2020.

And contrary to myth, stricter fuel economy standards would create jobs. The Union of Concerned Scientists just released a report that found that the 35 mpg standard would create nearly 24,000 auto industry jobs and over 200,000 new jobs economy-wide by 2020.

And here's a link to a report from the Union of Concerned Scientsts pointing out how we can have higher fuel economy and more jobs.

So, Joe, please stop the lies.

Joe ignores supboena in Duke Cunningham corruption case

Joe Knollenberg has been subpoenaed to testify in the case of Randal "Duke" Cunningham. What does he plan to do? He's planning on ignoring the legal document requiring him to testify in the case. Here's the item from the Detroit Free Press Politically Speaking column on Thursday, September 20.

Trent Wisecup says Cunningham is a crook and ought to go to jail, yet Joe and Trent obviously don't think George Bush and Dick Cheney are crooks in the way they've conducted foreign policy, ignoring subpoenas in the attorney firing case, the president issuing thousands of signing statements, saying he doesn't have to obey laws properly passed by the Congress. I guess what's good for the President is good for the Congressmen. The law means nothing to Joe Knollenberg.

Congressmen likely to ignore subpoenas

Don't expect Michigan congressmen Joe Knollenberg and Pete Hoekstra to come running to the defense of a military contractor accused of bribing former California Republican Rep. Randy (Duke) Cunningham, even though they've been subpoenaed -- along with 12 other members of Congress -- to do so.

None of the 13 plans to show up at Brent Wilkes' Oct. 2 trial, as the House's legal counsel has told them not to do, apparently determining that the subpoenas are overly broad.

In case you're wondering why the two from Michigan would receive calls, here's the likely reason: Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Township, served on the Appropriations Committee with Cunningham and had an office next to his. Hoekstra, R-Holland, was chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, on which Cunningham also served.

Cunningham is serving an eight-year prison term following his guilty plea to taking millions of dollars in bribes from Wilkes and others for government contracts.

Said Knollenberg's chief of staff, Trent Wisecup, of Wilkes: "We think the guy's a crook and he ought to go to jail."

Joe's health care prescription deadly

In a recent edtion of The Oakland Press, Joe Knollenberg trots out the same old tired line about socialized medicine and "evil" trial lawyers. I issue a challenge to Joe Knollenberg, go with me to see Michael Moore's new documentary, Sicko, then say that universal, single-payer health care doesn't work and that private enterprise does it better. It is common knowledge that Medicare does work extremely efficiently and their administrative costs are 2-3%, compared to 25-30% for the private health insurance industry. Another problem with Joe's plan, there are 47 million uninsured people in the country and more joining the rolls every day. Over 50% of the bankruptcies in this country occur due to medical emergencies caused by medical bills of people who had insurance.

I recently interviewed Adrian Campbell on my community television show. Adrian is a 25-year old woman who contracted ovarian cancer and had to go to Canada to get treatment, because her health plan refused coverage, saying 22-year-olds (she was 22 when she was diagnosed) don't get ovarian cancer. Then, to make matters worse, because she was in the movie, she was fired by her employer.

If Joe Knollenberg thinks his plan to offer a tax credit to employers for offering a wellness program is the solution, I dare him to walk a mile in Adrian's shoes. Why don't you come on my show with Adrian, Joe, and tell her how well your plan for a tax credit for an employer wellness program will work for her? I dare you, Joe.

According to the web site National Priorities for the cost of what we have spent in the 9th Congressional District of Michigan in 2007 on the war in Iraq, we could have provided health care to 121,000 citizens.

According to the Institute of Medicine, "lack of health insurance causes roughly 18,000 unnecessary deaths every year in the United States. Although America leads the world in spending on health care, it is the only wealthy, industrialized nation that does not ensure that all citizens have coverage." Insuring America's Health: Principles and Recommendations, Institute of Medicine, January 2004.
http://www.iom.edu/?id=19175

Quit blowing smoke up our butts, Joe. Universal, single-payer health care does work and it's time for America to take care of its citizens instead of fighting an ill-conceived war that President Bush lied us into for profits from the Iraqi oil fields.

Yet this is all Joe can say on health care.
In a shocking admission published in the Feburary 1, 2006 Detroit News, Congressman Joe Knollenberg is quoted as saying "Medicaid, Social Security and Medicare can't be sustained". Although many of us have always suspected that Knollenberg was out to destroy Social Security and Medicare, this is the first time he has been so blatant about his position.

"Medicaid, Social Security and Medicare can't be sustained."

Joe Knollenberg
February 1, 2005
Detroit News

Many have suspected that Joe Knollenberg has been wanting to completely disable important programs like Social Security and Medicare.

He and his fellow Republicans are still trying to dismantle Social Security by turning it into a privatized system, they just are not talking about it because they know the public disagrees.

Rather than try to convince the public, they are now trying to quietly change the program by sneaking some provisions into the budget bill.

Without any public statement warning voters that he and his evil henchmen (Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, JOE KNOLLENBERG, Tom Delay, Bill Frist, etc.) were again going to try to destroy the Social Security program, President Bush included the privatization of Social Security in the Budget Bill he sent to Congress on February 6, 2006.

Bush plans to not only privatize the program starting in 2010, but he is going to fund it by taking over $700 billion away from the current Social Security system.

Bush, Knollenberg, Cheney, etc. must truly be dedicated to the total destruction of Social Security if they are willing to take away a huge portion of the program’s funding, privatize the system so Wall Street Brokers can get richer, AND – in the interim, they are looking for ways to cut benefits for current recipients.

Shamefully, rather than tell the truth – that Bush and all the Republican’s in Congress plan to shutdown the Social Security program – the White House characterizes their position as “The President will also continue to promote comprehensive reform of Social Security to place the program’s finances on sustainable footing for future generations.”

Wow. That is a fancy sentence. Let me translate it into the truth:

The President will also continue to promote comprehensive reform try to sneak language into law that will eliminate the current Social Security program as we know it of Social Security and instead force Senior Citizens to invest their money in risky stocks – possibly losing all their retirement benefits – while making wealthy stock brokers and greedy Corporate Executives wealthier. to place the program’s finances on sustainable footing for future generations. Meanwhile, Bush and the Republican’s will try to cut benefits as much as possible to Senior Citizens making it even harder for them to pay their rent and buy their medications.

Please do not just take my word for it, look at p. 321 of Bush’s Budget proposal. It is all just plain as day. The White House estimates it will cost:

* $24.182 billion in fiscal 2010,

* $57.429 billion in fiscal 2011 and

* $630.533 billion for the five years after that

for a total of $712.144 billion.

This is what Joe says now:

Joe Knollenberg an enviornmentalist? Please.

Knollenberg's Anti-Environmental Record: Part 2

Joe Knollenberg must think the voters of the 9th District are stupid -- otherwise why would he tell us that he is an "environmentalist", when it is so clear from his voting record that he is really one of the most anti-environmental Congressman in history.

In a previous post we pointed out some of Knollenberg's anti-environmental votes and noted that we were unable to find even a single pro-environmental vote by Knollenberg.

Here is some more evidence of just how strongly anti-environmental Joe Knollenberg really is:

* Knollenberg added a rider to an appropriations bill prohibiting EPA from funding efforts to reduce greenhouse gases under programs like the Kyoto Protocol
* Knollenberg's biggest priority for years was to make certain that toilets could WASTE MORE WATER - rather than conserve water like a true environmentalist would propose
* Knollenberg supported a measure that prohibited EPA from tightening air pollution laws -- and even prohibited them from using their monitoring data to determine which areas of the country were meeting health based air pollution standards
* Knollenberg opposed EPA's efforts to use equal protection guarantees to assure that all Americans have clean air and clean water

In fact, Knollenberg is so anti-environmental, the Lana Pollack from the Michigan Environmental Council once gave Knollenberg an "award" consisting of a Ken doll with his head buried in a bucket of sand. It was a great metaphor for how Knollenberg treats most issues -- he hides from them -- but it is particularly appropriate for environmental issues because Knollenberg votes on them like a dummy with his head in a pile of sand.

It is easy to do a search online and find hundreds of articles about how anti-environmental Joe Knollenberg is -- but can anyone find an article about Joe doing ANYTHING positive and proactive for the environment?

Read what Joe says compared to what he does

Joe says he supports our veterans, yet his record is abysmal.

Joe Knollenberg says he supports the troops, but when given the chance put some money where his mouth is, he doesn't support them, he slashes their funding.

In fact, the Disabled American Veterans give him a ranking of 0.

* Voted against fully funding the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, guaranteeing them training and appropriate armor. [HR 1591, RollCall Vote 126, 4/25/07]

* Voted to continue awarding contracts to Halliburton even if the Pentagon's own audit processes found that more than $100 million of their contractor's costs in Iraq were unreasonable. [HR 4939, RollCall Vote 60, 3/16/06]

* Opposed expanding access to the military's TRICARE health insurance program to thousands of Reservist and National Guard members, even though 20 percent of all Reservists do not have health insurance, and 40 percent of Reservists aged 19 to 35 lack health coverage. [HR 1815 , Roll Call Vote #221, 5/25/2005]

* Voted against granting a bonus to grant a $1,500 bonus to every American service member serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, including National Guard and Reserve forces. [HR 3289, Roll Call Vote #554, 10/17/2003]

Joe, will you let this kind of intimidation continue?

These protestors were conducting a scheduled press conference when the police (brown shirts) moved in to break up the press conference. The First Amendment of our Constitution guarantees the right of free speech to speak out in dissent. Do you think that our government is still protecting our Constitution? What do you think, Joe?

Will Joe Get Fooled Again?

Congress is going to vote this month on war policy for the next year--and Bush is hoping all his "progress" talk will scare Congress away from voting for withdrawal. We can't let that happen.
Congress has the power to start bringing our troops home immediately. It is critical they use it this September.
Joe, do the right thing and stop the bloodbath. Vote to Bring The Troops Home.

Joe Nollenberg at Arts, Beats and Eats

It's Labor Day weekend and Joe NOllenberg is campaigning at Arts, Beats and Eats in Downtown Pontiac, telling people about some of Joe Knollenberg's bad votes in Congress, taking pictures with visitors to the festival and having some fun.
Joe found a booth where he could have his picture taken with Elmo.

Trent ties Primaries to survival of Auto Industry

Now this is over the top, Trent, tying the survival of the auto industry to Michigan's primary election. The reason the auto industry is in trouble is because they put short-term corporate profits ahead of long-term stategy. We've all known that higher oil prices have been coming for a long time. What did the U.S. auto industry do, build more SUV's that get awful gas mileage. So now what do they want? They want Congress to sit on their hands instead of demanding that U.S. built vehicles give consumers higher gas mileage.

We should demand better from our auto manufacturers and the Democrats did the right thing by revoking the $6 billion in subsidies to the oil companies that are already making historical profits off the backs of average Americans. Joe Knollenberg and Republicans are always willing to put profits ahead of people.

The survival of the auto industry doesn't depend on when Michigan votes for our presidential candidates. It depends on our representatives doing the right thing for a change.

If we can put a man on the moon in 10 years, surely we can figure out a way for our cars and trucks to get 50 or even 100 miles per gallon. But that will take leadership and that's what Joe Knollenberg is short on.

One more thing, Trent, you might want to get a new picture. This one looks like those mug shots of Tom DeLay and Larry Craig.

More from the End The War Rally at Pontiac Central

Almost 600 people packed the auditorium at Pontiac Cental High School on August 28 to send a message to Joe Knollenberg that when he goes back to Congres in September, he should listen to his constituents and not George Bush and support the troops and bring them home to their families and loved ones.

Joe NOllenberg made an appearance and was serenaded by the Raging Grannies.

There were lots of impeachment signs visible. Hold George W. Bush and Dick Cheney accountable for their crimes against humanity.

Joe NOllenberg loved the Woodward Dream Cruise. Lots of folks wanted to get information about the Town Hall meeting on August 28 at 7 p.m. at Pontiac Central High School. Here's a video of Joe riding in the JOEMobile.

Here's Joe with a check from constituents for the cost of the war in Iraq so far in 2007, over $1 billion.

Here's a picture of Joe showing voters his record on the issues he's most proud of. What do you think of Joe's votes?

Here's one showing Joe signing up to volunteer for Gary Peters' campaign. I guess Joe already knows this election isn't going his way. Bye, bye, Joe.

Marine Mom urges Congressman Knollenberg to Take Stand Against Endless War in Iraq

Welcome for Returning Warrior at Troy Hooters

Marine Mom Urges Congressman Knollenberg Take Stand Against Endless War in Iraq
Troy, MI –Debbie Jackson does not know why, over four years after President Bush declared “mission accomplished” in Iraq, General Petraeus wants to keep our troops there for another decade. “So, the question our military moms, dads, wives, sons, daughters have of the government is: what is the mission there now? There is a difference between supporting our troops and supporting this war as it is now!” Last week, Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute recommended a draft to facilitate such a prolonged occupation and elected representatives, including Joe Knollenberg, the U.S. Congressman from Debbie’s area, have yet to lift a finger to thwart it. For now, Debbie is happy that her son is coming home and would like to make sure that he does not return to fight in someone else’s civil war. “On 8/26/07 @ 4:00pm we will welcome home our son, Brandon Jackson and other military service members from the 3/6 Lima Company returning from Iraq. We invite anyone interested to join us and celebrate their safe return. Welcome home, and let’s keep them home! “
Debbie will be hosting a welcome at the Troy Hooters at the intersection of Rochester Road and Big Beaver. Veterans and military families are invited. “We considered inviting Congressman Knollenberg to the event, but decided not to after we saw his grade of C from Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. If he comes, he should be prepared to justify his dismal voting record on veterans’ issues.”

Representatives from the 9th District Chapter of Americans Against Escalation in Iraq will be present together with Joe NOllenberg, a giant puppet-head symbolizing the Congressman’s refusal to stand up for American troops, instead giving in to pressure from the administration. On August 28th, the group has invited Congressman Knollenberg for a Townhall meeting at Central High School in Pontiac to take a stand against the Iraq war. The Congressman’s office has yet to respond to the invitation.

Trent Wisecup and Joe Knollenberg Ultimate Hypocrites

In the article below Trent Wisecup, Joe Knollenberg's spokesperson (Joe never seems to talk to the press himself) Trent says, "Certain things are private and that includes his (Knollenberg's) home." Isn't that ironic since Joe Knollenberg voted in favor of the recently passed Protect America Act, which gives President Bush even more power to spy on Americans. It seems Joe Knollenberg is the worst kind of hypocrite. He believes in one level of privacy for Congressmen and no privacy for the average citizen. Way to go, Joe. Why does Joe Knollenberg think that he's entitled to privacy, but you and I are not? Does this man really deserve to be our Congressman? I think not.

Knollenberg afraid of old ladies and ice cream

For those of you that follow this blog regularly, you have already seen the video of our two visits to Joe Knollenberg's neighborhood and to Joe's house specifically. On the first occasion we had the Raging Grannies with us and they sang a couple songs. On the second occasion we were delivering free ice cream to Joe's neighbors and we offered one to Joe's wife, Sandi. We were briefly detained by the Bloomfield Township police when we entered the subdivision where Joe lives. We have video of the encounter with the police. On three separate occasions during our conversation they confirm we did nothing wrong and let us go on our way.

Well, today I received a registered letter from the Bloomfield Township police outlining the local ordinances they feel we were violating as a result of our visits threatening legal action if we return to Joe's neighborhood.

Joe, all we want to do is talk to you. Why the bully tactics? If ever there was evidence that you have learned your lessons at the knee of Karl Rove, this is it. You don't want to face your constituents about your stand on the war, but you have no problem calling in the cops.

How scary can a couple old ladies singing on your porch be? How frightening is it for someone to offer your wife a free ice cream and invite you to a Town Hall meeting to discuss the most important issue of our time, the war in Iraq.

Joe, you have learned your lessons well. Don't negotiate, declare war. Bring in the lawyers, stonewall.

Why not show some courage, Joe? Don't hide behind the police. What kind of representative of the people continues to stonewall until they are removed from office? One name comes to mind, Joe, Richard M. Nixon. And we all know what happened to him.

Chet Zarko, a regular commeter here is really a paid Republican operative

On Saturday in White Lake, Joe NOllenberg had his first encouter with Chet Zarko. Chet is a paid Republican consultant, apparently working for Joe Knollenberg. Chet had his video camera with him on Sunday and really wanted to know about the the giant head of Joe NOllenberg. Chet also worked on the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative petition campaign and which was actually successful, mostly due to the fact that petition gatherers were lying to petiton signers about what they were signing and the confusing name of the campaign, which actually was successful in denying the state from using race as a factor in college admissions and state employment. So, here is the video Chet shot of Joe NOllenberg chasing Joe down the road after the GOP picnic in White Lake on Saturday.

Knollenberg Votes With Big Oil Companies

Once again, Joe Knollenberg has voted for big oil and against alternative energy.

On Friday, Joe Knollenberg voted NO on the "Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2007". [H.R. 2776, 08/04/07, Roll Call 835]

Title I of the Act describes the purpose of the Act:

Extends through 2012 the tax credit for the production of electricity from renewable resources (e.g., wind, closed and open-loop biomass, geothermal energy, small irrigation power, municipal solid waste, and qualified hydropower). Imposes a limit on such tax credit based upon investment in renewable resource facilities placed in service after 2008 in lieu of the current phaseout provisions for such credit.

This Act provided tax incentives to companies and individuals to use and develop alternative energy. It even seems to provide a tax credit to our domestic auto companies to develop and produce plug-in hybrid vehicles!

So, once again, Joe Knollenberg voted AGAINST our domestic auto industry.

Apparently Joe Knollenberg isn't concerned that we import 65% of our oil -- even though it poses such obvious national security concerns.

We Cannot Afford 2 More Years of Joe Knollenberg.

Joe votes against resting our troops

Every day Joe Knollenberg casts more votes that show how out of step he is with his constituents. Yesterday Joe voted against a bill that gives our soldiers serving in Iraq a one-to-one ratio between time served in Iraq and time spent at home before being redeployed.

How can Joe claim to support our troops, then vote against this common sense bill to give our troops a rest from their grueling tasks in Iraq. Way to go, Joe. Here's a link to a roll call of votes on this bill. Click here.

Joe Knollenberg won't even support children's health care

Yesterday, Congressman Knollenberg voted against a bill, H.R. 3162, commonly known as the State Children's Health Insurance Program, (SCHIP), that provides health care coverage to America's children, the least protected class of citizens in America. Seems like another example of Joe Knollenberg being pro-birth, but not pro-life. How shameful to try to withhold funding for the children of America through this valuable program.

Fortunately, the bill passed the House of Representatives, despite Congressman Joe Knollenberg's No vote. Heres is the link to the bill information. Click here.

Giving Free Ice Cream to Joe and his neighbors

We went to Joe Knollenberg's neighborhood delivering free ice cream and to invite Joe to our Town Hall meeting on August 28 in Pontiac at Central High School at 7 p.m. Joe's wife, Sandie, was home but she wouldn't even open the door. Oh, well, we had lots of ice cream for everyone else.

Knollenberg hits new Low

Congressman Joe Knollenberg must really be getting desperate.

Now he is taking credit for legislation that he had little to do with.

His blog today notes: " I am very pleased to announce that the House of Representatives passed the America Competes Act, with my strong support."

What was his "strong support"? He voted for it. Yes. He voted for it. That's it. That is all there is to see at Joe's disasterous reign. Move on.

He is trying to take credit for legislation that he not only didn't sponsor, but he didn't even co-sponsor!

Then again, learning that Knollenberg considers doing nothing other than voting on a piece of legislation constitutes "strong support", we can now understand why he has such an abysmal record and poor reputation in Congress.

According to the conservative website govtrack, in 15 years, he has only proposed 72 pieces of legislation -- 60 of which never got out of committee!!! And of those that actually made it out of committee, only 6 were passed.

Now, I'm not advocating legislation for the sake of legislation. But certainly there are more than 6 problems in this country that have needed to be addressed over the past 15 years.

We Can't Afford Joe Knollenberg Anymore.

Joe Knollenberg's "official" Congressional website reads like notes from a cheerleaders team meeting.

Yea. Yippee. Hurrah.

But wait, it gets worse. Now they have started as "Ask Joe" feature.

Here are some sample questions for Joe:
  • Is it good to read?
  • Is it usually hot or cold in your Congressional District during the month of July?
  • Do dogs have ears?

I'd submit these, but the real questions are just as funny.

If the Founders were around today they would most certainly impose a minimum IQ requirement on Congressional Candidates.

What Do Joe Knollenberg & Alaska Senator Ted Stevens Have in Common?

What Do Joe Knollenberg & Alaska Senator Ted Stevens Have in Common?

They are are both champions at earmarking.

Earmarking is when a member of Congress sneaks a little line item into a bill -- usually appropriation bills -- and Knollenberg is a member of the Appropriations Committee -- specifying taxpayer dollars to be directed to some pet project.

These are not small items either. Knollenberg has been bragging on his website for weeks now about the "earmarks" he has slid into appropriation bills -- and they total over $60 million for Knollenberg alone. And those are only the earmarks he wants to make public!!!

He has inserted dozens, maybe even hundreds of earmarks into appropriations bills. Some of them may even be valuable uses of tax dollars.

But they are not all so good or altruistic.

In fact, Knollenberg chaired the committee that came up with the record breaking, pork filled Transportation Bill that topped $286 billion and included the Ted Stevens infamous "Bridge to Nowhere".

And Knollenberg has refused to respond to requests to release a list of his earmarks. [CNN did a survey recently and Knollenberg wouldn't even answer them.

Knollenberg Slides In an $8 Million Earmark For His Largest Campaign Contributor

Knollenberg inserted an $8 million earmark into an appropriations bill that would have gone into the pocket of one of his largest campaign donor's company.

Specifically, Knollenberg had inserted language requiring Amtrak buy $8 million in refrigerated railcars from Tony Soave's company. Soave is one of Knollenberg's biggest campaign donors.

Knollenberg & "The Cunningham Effect"
In a previous post, we reported on how Joe Knollenberg and Randy "Duke" Cunningham, a former Congressman now serving prison time for accepting bribes, worked together to do a favor for Washington D.C. lobbyist Mark Valente.

Although they had to work against their own party and their own President (Bush), with Joe Knollenberg and Randy Cunningham on the committee, the lobbyists prevailed.

According to a December 6, 2001, article in the Washington Post, it was Joe Knollenberg, the new chairman of the committee who bowed to the lobbyists and granted their wishes.

The story of how the lawyers' advocates succeeded illustrates anew the influence wielded by individual members of Congress -- and unelected players -- who take a personal interest in District legislation.

In this case, key roles were played by lobbyist Mark Valente III, who enjoys close ties to House GOP leaders, and Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R-Mich.), the new chairman of the House panel that oversees the District budget.

Valente was lobbying on behalf of the Alexandria law firm of Dalton, Dalton & Houston, which often represents parents seeking special education services for their children. Knollenberg has long been sympathetic on the issue of lifting the cap -- his top aide has an autistic son and won a large judgment against a suburban Detroit school district after a debilitating legal fight.

The real kicker in the Washington Post story is the part where Joe Knollenberg is praised by Randy Cunningham as being the one responsible for basically giving the lobbyists what they wanted!

"The new chairman [Joe Knollenberg] made the difference," said Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Calif.), who fought the change and who is the longest-serving member of the House Appropriations subcommittee on the District.

Yes. That is the same Duke Cunningham that is serving prison time now for accepting millions of dollars in bribes from defense contractors.

In fact, an article in the National Journal coined the phrase "The Cunningham Effect" and that article specifically references Knollenberg's $8 million earmark to one his largest campaign contributors. (Note that Soave is still one of Knollenberg's biggest contributors -- in fact, he is the 9th biggest donor -- behind companies like GM, Ford, DaimlerChrysler, etc.)

Conservatives Are Fed Up With Republican's Who Are Not Fiscally Responsible

Some of the harshest critics of earmarking comes from the classic conservatives in the Republican Party. They are fed up with pork barrel spending. A quick perusal of the traditional Conservative journals shows that even they consider Knollenberg's spending habits to be outrageous. [Taxpayers For Common Sense, Robert Novak, etc.]

More Questionable Ties Between Knollenberg & Lobbyists

We've provided extensive documentation on how Joe Knollenberg is frighteningly close to questionable lobbyists. For example:

1. Knollenberg is paying Trent Wisecup, a sleazy lobbyist, $ 240,000/yr in TAXPAYER money to work on his campaign.

2. Knollenberg accepted thousands of dollars from convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff

3. Knollenberg accepted thousands of dollars from Bob Ney -- his friend from Congress who has been convicted of accepting bribes from Jack Abramoff

4. Knollenberg accepted thousands of dollars from former Congressman Duke Cunningham -- who is now serving prison time for accepting millions of dollars in bribes

5. Knollenberg accepted thousands of dollars from convicted felon Brent Wilkes -- the lobbyist who also bribed Duke Cunningham

6. Knollenberg is well known for doing favors for lobbyists in exchange for campaign contributions (e.g., the $8 million earmark he gave to Tony Soave -- his biggest campaign donor) and the favor(s) he did for lobbyist Mark Valente

Well, in another example of bad judgment and of just how close Knollenberg is to lobbyists, one of the biggest fundraisers for Knollenberg's campaign fund this year was held by one of the biggest lobbying firms in Washington D.C. -- Van Scoyoc & Associates.

This firm lobbies for foreign countries like Egypt and is known for lobbying for arms sales!!

Just this weekend we heard news reports that President Bush wants to send billions of dollars in advanced weaponry to countries like Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Looks like Van Scoyoc & Associates have already bought Knollenberg's vote.

Taking a look at Knollenberg's website you can see the millions of dollars of earmarks that he brags about giving. But he refuses to release the full list of his earmarks to CNN. Obviously he is trying to hide some of the earmarks he has slipped into legislation to give federal money to his friends and campaign donors.

Of course, by not making this information public himself, Knollenberg seems to be underestimating not only our investigative skill, but those of the FBI as well. Frankly, we just think much of this information about his ties to lobbyists and felons will be more useful to voters as we get closer to the 2008 election.

Knollenberg Letters to the Editor keep coming

July 28 Edition of the Oakland Press had these two letters to the editor disputing the story that had appeared in the Oakland Press last week. They tell some of the story of what happened when some constituents tried to talk to Joe Knollenberg's staff about Joe's position on the war in Iraq.

Knollenberg Goes On Pork Barrel Spending Spree

Knollenberg is a big pig at the taxpayers trough.

In a lame attempt to offset criticism of his pork barrel spending, Knollenberg is now bragging about some of his "earmarks". Earmarks are where line items are secretly slipped into appropriations bills and that specify amounts of taxpayer money to be directed to friends of the Congressman.

Here is what the ultra conservative Heritage Foundation says about earmarks in an article titled "The Problem with Pork":

In the past, Congress created grant programs and either distributed the money to state and local governments by formula or instructed federal agencies to distribute the grants through a merit-based application process. Today, Congress actually determines, within legislation, who will receive government grants by "earmarking" grant money to specific recipients. Earmarks are also known as pork projects.

Earmarking is a corrupting process. Many of these pork projects are shepherded through Congress by lobbyists, who, for a generous commission, ensure that a client gets a government grant without having to go through the regular process of justifying a project to a federal agency. Perhaps coincidentally, lawmakers often receive hefty campaign donations from earmark recipients. Former Representative Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-CA), for example, is currently serving an eight-year prison term for accepting bribes in return for pork projects.

Knollenberg is currently bragging on his website about over $30 million in pork barrel spending. But he still won't release a list of all of his pork projects. He is only discussing the handful that may pass as being generally useful for the community. Knollenberg is still hiding the majority of his pork barrel spending spree.

There are of course dozens of earmarks that Knollenberg doesn't want you to know about. Earmarks like the $8 million he specified be spent by Amtrak purchasing refrigerated rail cars from his BIGGEST campaign donor's company!!!

A formula for Disaster:

Knollenberg = Pork Barrel Spending = Favors for Lobbyists

Knollenberg Gives D.C. Lobbyist Over $39,000 of Taxpayer Money

In another example of how Joe Knollenberg wastes your tax dollars, he has hired a Washington, D.C. lobbyist, Trent Wisecup, as his Chief of Staff -- even though all he is doing is running Knollenberg's re-election campaign -- and paid him $39,957 in just the first 3 months of the year!!!

Those useless glossy fliers you've been getting in the mail from Knollenberg -- also at taxpayer expense -- are work of this lobbyist.

Wisecup used to lobby for the pharmaceutical industry. In fact, his lobbying firm has bragged about how successful Wisecup was in convincing Congressman like Knollenberg to vote AGAINST SENIORS by prohibiting them from saving money by getting their prescriptions from Canada.

Notice how the flyers you have gotten from Knollenberg look almost identical to the flyers Wisecup used as a lobbyist.

It is bad enough that corrupt lobbyists have so much influence over Congress. Now they are using lobbyists to influence our choices in major elections. It doesn't get much sleazier than that.

This not only shows just how tied Knollenberg is with lobbyists, it brings Knollenberg's judgment into question.

How can you possibly trust anyone who spends nearly $40,000 of taxpayer money on a lobbyist.

And that $40,000 is just for the first 3 months of the year.
  • 2 months work for the Appropriations Committee: $19,978.50 ($ 9,989.25/month)
  • 3 months work for Knollenberg: $19,090.57 + $887.93 = $19,938.50 ($9,969.25/month)
That means we, as taxpayers, are paying this lobbyist $ 19, 958.50/month!!!

If Joe Knollenberg wants to hire a lobbyist, he should be honest about it and pay the lobbyist from campaign funds, not out of our tax dollars.

Joe Knollenberg is wasting $239,502/year
of taxpayer money on a lobbyist!!!

We cannot afford 2 more years of Joe Knollenberg.

Joe, we were at your house. Where were you?

The Raging Grannies went caroling for peace on Sunday at Congressman Joe Knollenberg's house, but Joe was nowhere to be found. We did find a few neighbors at home. One said she tells Joe all the time, he doesn't represent her and that she can't get Joe to listen either.

Where is the outrage?

Where’s the outrage?

I’m amazed at the level of rhetoric that has been generated by my comments about Joe Knollenberg being a sinner in regard to his votes supporting President Bush’s fiasco in Iraq. There was a time in this country when the religious community would have condemned the war in Iraq as a moral issue. Nowadays leaders of the faith community defend the war or ignore it. It seems they are more interested in Terry Schiavo than the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis that have died in and been displaced by this unjust war. People of faith don’t seem to think that an Iraqi life is worth as much as an American life. I thought all life was precious to god. Where are the leaders of the faith community now? Where is their moral outrage at President Bush for lying this country into war and being the cause of thousands of American soldiers’ deaths and thousands of soldiers being seriously wounded? Where is the outrage from people of faith about that? Instead they have their panties in a bunch because I asked Joe Knollenberg to atone for his sin of voting to support an unjust war. The shame of it.

Let’s not be distracted from the real issue by Joe Knollenberg’s campaign manager. The real moral issue here is the loss of life being caused by Joe “Knollenbush’s” war. Why doesn’t the pro-life community rise up now and tell Joe Knollenberg to withdraw his support for the moral outrage of this administration, the war in Iraq?

Knollenberg Leads The Pack in Pork Barrel Spending

Knollenberg is currently bragging about his Pork Barrel/earmark spending on his website.

He is trying to make it look like he is "helping" us. But the real story is that he is just a Big Pork Barrel Spender.

One of Knollenberg's recent Pork projects was to give the Troy Chamber of Commerce $150,000 in taxpayer money so they could buy a solar greenhouse. (A "solar" greenhouse? Is there some other kind?)

What is Knollenberg Hiding?
While promoting a few of his pork barrel projects, Joe Knollenberg refuses to release a list of ALL the earmarks he has secretly slipped into appropriations.

CNN recently did a survey of every member of Congress to see what earmarks they have secretly slipped into legislation. Knollenberg refused to even respond!?!

Knollenberg's reputation is that of a BIG SPENDER.
The Citizens Against Government Waste tracks earmarks and they recently highlighted Knollenberg's "egregious" spending.

Of course one of Knollenberg's most famous earmarks is the one where he slipped an $8 million earmark in for one of his biggest campaign contributors. Classic Joe.

Oakland County Cannot Afford Joe Knollenberg.

Compare Joe's Rhetoric to his record. You decide.

Listen to what Joe says about his support for our troops. Click here to listen to a message from Joe himself, then read the rest of this post and see if Joe's rhetoric matches his votes.

Knollenberg Consistently Votes AGAINST Veterans

Joe Knollenberg says he supports the troops, but when given the chance put some money where his mouth is, he doesn't support them, he slashes their funding.

Here is another ad we want to run against Joe Knollenberg.

Joe doesn't like when he is asked to atone for war vote

Funny how Republicans love to invoke religion when they're voting against embryonic stem cell research or voting against a woman's right to choose, but bring religion into the debate over the war in Iraq and they cry foul and start whining.
The Detroit Free Press and the Oakland Press are covering the story.
Knollenberg staff seeks reprimand of activist for religion comments

July 18, 2007

BY TODD SPANGLER

FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg is taking exception to a comment made by an Oakland County activist about his religion – and his staff is calling on Gov. Jennifer Granholm to do something about it.

In an article in the Oakland Press this week, Rochester Hills resident Bruce Fealk made a reference to a planned protest outside Knollenberg’s office, saying it was aimed at getting the Republican congressman to come out in favor of legislation to end the war in Iraq.

In his comments, Fealk, 53, said Knollenberg should atone for his sins – meaning his refusal to back Democratic-sponsored legislation to set timetables for removing the troops – like a good Catholic.

Both Knollenberg’s staff and the National Republican Congressional Committee slammed Fealk and MoveOn.org, a nationwide advocacy group to which Fealk belongs. In a statement today, the NRCC said, “MoveOn.org has once again made a name for themselves by attacking Joe Knollenberg’s personal beliefs and turning the Iraq war into a political, partisan game. … Religious smears have no place in political discourse.”

Meanwhile, Knollenberg’s chief of staff, Trent Wisecup, sent a letter to Granholm’s Washington office, noting that the governor had once appeared on Fealk’s cable access show in Oakland County and asking that she not do so again. It also said the governor should “inform him that injecting an elected official from Michigan’s religion into a debate on a public policy issue crosses the line.”

“His private beliefs are his private beliefs,” Wisecup said today.

Fealk, who said he was raised Jewish and now attends a non-denominational church, said today that if he had it to do over, he probably wouldn’t include the “Catholic boy part.” But he said he does believe that if Knollenberg has strong religious beliefs, he should vote to bring the troops home now.

Knollenberg has said he has doubts about President Bush’s surge policy but is willing to wait until September to see if progress is made.

“I think it’s time for the carnage to end,” said Fealk, who also noted that he is in no way an official spokesman for Moveon.org. Fealk said he is a member who sometimes acts as a local organizer.

Jennifer Lindenauer, communication director for MoveOn.org – a group that now claims some 3.4 million members and is primarily known for its anti-war stance – said she believes the Republicans are “doing what they normally do, which is make a mountain out of a molehill” by bringing attention to Fealk’s comments.

“They’re trying to distract us from the real conversation" about the war, she said.

She added, however, that bringing up someone’ s religious beliefs is “not a MoveOn tactic.”

“I agree with Fealk when he said he probably shouldn’t have brought religion into it, because the issue is ending the war in Iraq,” she said.

As for the governor, her spokeswoman Liz Boyd said that she won’t be making any promises not to appear on Fealk’s show again, though there are no immediate plans to do so.

The governor’s office also declined to comment on whether Fealk’s mention of religion was appropriate or not.

Joe's office slams the door on more constituents

This video shows the shabby treatment that constituents receive at Joe Knollenberg's office.
At least they could have invited us in for a cup of coffee.

Poor Joe Whines about having his faith called into question

Wednesday's edition of the Oakland Press has the article below denouncing MoveOn.org's tactics and the reference made to his Catholic faith. Funny how Republicans call on faith when they talk about abortion and a multitude of other issues, but when called on to look to his faith for direction on a matter of war and justice, they get all steamed.
Our troops have it alot rougher than poor, whiny Joe Knollenberg. Quit your whining Joe and do the right thing and bring our troops home after you look to your faith for guidance. Pray for our troops and that they make it home safely and use your vote to bring them home.

Joe's office slams the door on Sister Barbara Cardinal

Shawn Ciavattone wouldn't even talk to Sister Barbara Cardinal today, whose nephew Billy is serving In Iraq. Joe Knollenberg doesn't care about our troops. He needs to atone for his sins. Joe, you need to go to church this Sunday and ask for forgiveness in the confessional. Watch this video to see how Joe Knollenberg's office treats his constituents, even worse, a woman with a nephew serving in Knollenbush's fiasco in Iraq.

How corrupt is Joe Knollenberg?

You can judge for yourself. I've been researching Joe Knollenberg's campaign finance report. Guess who shows up on Joe's list of donors, Jerry Lewis, not the comedian, but the congressman from California who is under investigation in connection with the Duke Cunningham case. You can read the Washington Post story by clicking here.
Apparently Jerry Lewis is another Catholic boy that needs to atone for his sins. Here he is with the Pope. Maybe the Pope took Mr. Lewis' confession.

Some other interesting donors on Joe's campaign finanance report, contributions from Wal-Mart. Maybe that would explain Joe's vote recently against the Employee Free Choice Act, which would have let employees join unions more easily. Another contributor is General Dynamics Corporation, one of the largest defense contractors in the county. That might explain Joe's steadfast support for George W. Bush's war. Joe also used his campaign funds to purchase $806 of Detroit Tiger tickets. I wonder who Joe was entertaining at the expense of his campaign. Some other intersting contributors, eBay Corporation and Daimler Chrysler.

Knollenberg vulnerable for supporting George W. Bush and his war

Just to set Tom Wisecup straight, Americans Against the Escalation in Iraq are certainly not needed in our efforts to retire Joe Knollenberg. Joe is vulnerable not just because he barely won against Nancy Skinner. Joe is vulnerable because he continues to support an unpopular, unjust war that is taking resources from domestic priorities and putting our nation at risk.

Joe Knollenberg: On The Extreme Edge of the Far Right Wing

Recognizing that the 9th Congressional District consists of generally moderate voters (i.e., voters who are fiscally conservative, but socially either liberal or libertarian by nature), Joe Knollenberg is now trying to rewrite history to portray himself as a "moderate".

Tsk. Tsk. Joe.

We have been watching you for years. This blog may be relatively new, but Knollenberg has a voting record dating back 14 years that prove that Knollenberg votes with the extreme right wing faction of the Republican Party.

In light of the recent article in the Congressional Quarterly where Knollenberg acknowledges that he will have to move to the center in order to be re-elected in 2008, we thought it would be appropriate to review again just how extreme Joe Knollenberg has been in Congress.

We'll be covering the following topics in more detail in coming posts:

Joe Knollenberg OPPOSES:

  • Joe Knollenberg opposes any timelines for bringing troops home from Iraq.
  • Joe Knollenberg opposes tax and trade policies that would protect our jobs.
  • Joe Knollenberg opposes laws to protect Clean Water and Clean Air.
  • Joe Knollenberg is opposed to embryonic stem cell research.
  • Joe Knollenberg is opposed to a national healthcare program.

Joe Knollenberg SUPPORTS:

  • Joe Knollenberg supports privatizing Social Security.
  • Joe Knollenberg supports tax and trade policies that oursource our jobs.
  • Joe Knollenberg supports tax and trade policies that hurt middle-class families.

Joe Knollenberg is Too Extreme for Oakland County.
